While in the former the theme of the poem is introduced in the octave and developed in the sestet, Wyatt’s poem does not maintain the division and distribution of thought. The poet begins by enumerating the conflicting states of mind occasioned by the onset of love: “I find no peace and all my war is done. Most of Thomas Wyatt’s poems have been about love and “I Find No Peace And All My War Is Done” is no exception. The poem is about the frustration the poet or poem speaker faced in a certain love relationship. The poet opened the poem with the conclusion in his mind saying that since he couldn’t find no peace, he would give up his fighting.

My internet just got up and running again)The first thing that I noticed was that he gave love the adjective of long, and then personified it in the following line by referring to it as ‘his’. Looking at the Oxford definition of long, it doesn’t just mean an elongated shape; but it also means lasting or taking a great amount of time or relatively great in extent. Looking at it that way, immediately Wyatt is telling us that his love is lasting and vast and resides in his heart. The next line “ Into my face presseth with bold pretence And therein campeth displaying his banner” is most likely referring to how the love that resides in his heart is able to press against his face boldly and give away his emotions. This immediately paints the character as a man filled with deep emotions who is unable to hide them.He then refers to a woman that taught him to love and suffer (most likely a woman that broke his heart) and makes reference to how she controls the emotions that control him. I think the next few lines afterwards describes his heart’s reaction to a woman controlling it.

He says that “ wherewith love to the heart’s forest he fleeth” so that indicates that the love has left his face (maybe becoming impassive with hopelessness for the woman?) and it flees back into his heart where it is safe to experience pain and cry because of whatever happened to it. Wyatt says that his love “ hideth and not appeareth” so it’s safe to assume that whatever the woman did to him made him not want to love again.I think that the master he’s referring to in the third last line would be his love as well, because he says “ when my master feareth” which probably means that the love that controls him is fearful now. His last couple lines just say that loving is life and it ends faithfully too.-Kristen Woodall.

I think it’s interesting that Wyatt claims the love as “his” and that he takes ownership of love. Love is traditionally thought of as a weak, female urge, and here he’s giving into his feminine weakness for love. Traditional ideals of masculinity hold that men should be strong and not be undone. However, Wyatt is completely bowled over by this love he feels for this woman. He uses military/battle imagery in the poem, personifying his love as an opposing army, camping in his mind and “spreading his banner” there. In the woman’s rejection of him, he retreats, wounded, to a quiet field in which to die.Wyatt intersects the traditional male and female worlds in his love sonnet.

He projects feminine qualities upon himself in his embrace of love, and speaks with warrior/male imagery to make the poem more acceptable for the male-dominated scene of courtly love and pursuit in Henry VIII’s court.-Emily Hunsberger. If you read the line “And in mine heart doth keep his residence” he’s pretty much saying that love keeps residence inside of his heart, but he replaces love with ‘his’ thus giving it a personified identity. It pretty much gives love as much power as a person would have by giving it a gender, which is a dangerous quality considering that it lives within Wyatt himself.
